Dr Ian Spry QC announced, before Christmas last year, his retirement as editor of National Observer, after having edited some thirty issues of the journal. “I have found this extremely rewarding, and the circulation and influence of the journal have been increasing,” he told members of the Council for the National Interest. “We are extremely fortunate that Professor Philip Ayres, the biographer of Malcolm Fraser and Owen Dixon and a member of the Council, has kindly agreed to succeed me. … Philip’s views on social and political issues are on many subjects very close to those of myself and of other members of the Council.” The interim editorial team wishes to thank Ian for producing, over a period of almost eight years, a consistently high-quality journal of public affairs. During his time as editor, Ian has performed an invaluable role in making available to the Australian public important articles — often on issues of critical national interest that the political parties, universities and media would prefer to ignore. That the journal has played this role is largely thanks to the devoted and professional way in which Ian has performed the many duties associated with the journal, such as writing, editing and administration. For this service, National Observer readers will always be grateful. • John Ballantyne, interim editor.
